Session 1: Reading and the Brain: Implications for Teaching & Learning
We will explore how
learning to read requires the development of both visual and language areas of the brain.

Session 2:
From Understanding Sounds to Understanding Complex Text
Participants will learn about the 5 pillars of reading, the introduction of phonics in early years, and the development of reading from K-12.

Session 3: Evidence-Based Practices for Greater Results
We will look at
teaching strategies that are proven to have a high impact on student learning, and explore explicit, direct instruction as a proven and highly effective approach to lesson design and delivery.

Session 4: Literacy Strategies for Higher Order Thinking
Participants will assess different strategies for different levels of learning, and will develop activities for building background knowledge - an essential component of reading comprehension.

When Students Might Need Something Different
We will explore
classroom strategies,
small group strategies,
Pre-referral interventions, and accommodations for students of concern.
